Kariega Main Lodge consists of 21 air-conditioned log chalets, lined up along the narrow road through the lodge. Each chalet has two separate bedrooms: a double and a twin – and each bedroom has a small en-suite bathroom. Among these is a living area, in which the focus is an old-style sofa and chairs, and a very welcome log-burner – for which kindling and logs are supplied. We loved lighting the fire and having the warmth in the evenings. Even though the décor was dated, the layout of the bedrooms and lounge was ideal for a small family.

I don’t have a bucket list but if I did then safari would be the only thing on it and our few days and game drives at Kariega Game Reserve Main Lodge would have filled my bucket to overflowing!!!
We were v v lucky to have an absolutely fantastic Ranger in Carrie-Ann – she was knowledgeable, helpful, professional, accommodating, personable and great fun – she was brilliant and made the trip an unforgettable experience!
The Main Lodge accommodation was super (we stayed in Lodges 1 and 1a) and the facilities offered by the Main Lodge in terms of dining, bar, pool, and wellness center were fab! The food was great – tasty and plentiful at every meal time, with the drinks being v good value for money (drinks were not included in the package we bought).
We were fortunate – on our morning, afternoon and evening drives we saw 30+ elephants, lions, and lionesses, hippos (including a baby!), a family of rhino, several giraffes as well as lots of zebras, ostrich, impala, nyala, waterbuck etc etc etc
I can’t recommend this Game Reserve highly enough! The facilities, service, and experience were second to none.
You should go!!~ Caroline S ~ Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
“Great stay at Kariega”
For a family-friendly, safe, non-malarial game reserve Kariega ticks all the boxes. It’s an easy drive from Port Elizabeth and a great end to a Garden route self-drive that had us looking forward rather than dreading the end of our trip. The main lodge chalets are fantastic for families and my 5-year-old was delighted with her own room with bathroom with roll top bath, and with the monkeys playing in the trees as we stepped out onto our deck on arrival. Was also great to have our own log fire in the living area. We loved our game drives and river cruise and had amazing close-up encounters with loads of wildlife, particularly with the 30 plus elephants that ambled right by us, surrounding our vehicle seemingly not even noticing our presence; and with a mating pair of lions (described as playing to my daughter). Amazing staff, great kids club, and an overall really warm welcome.~ R2247DCandream ~ Stellenbosch
“Big tick on the bucket list!”
As soon as you pass through the main gates you know that this place is going to be special. We were met at the main reception by our ranger Archie who showed us round the main lodge and settled us into our chalet. We did 5 game drives with Archie, early morning and late afternoon, each drive being totally different as Archie puts in a tremendous effort to show you all the wildlife, his knowledge and experience is vast and it’s a holiday we will never forget. The food in the main lodge is buffet style and is very good. The only one comment I would make is our chalet was looking slightly tired in some areas and could do with a redecoration but I would have no hesitation in recommending this game reserve. One final note Archie makes a fantastic hot chocolate for sundowners!~ Caroline H ~ Nottingham, United Kingdom
“Most wonderful experience !!”
Our stay started wonderfully with a friendly welcome at the reception. Our ranger Trust took us to the main lodge and showed us around. Everything looked just great. When we entered our lodge we were surprised how big and beautiful it was. The quality of breakfast, lunch, and dinner was of good standards. It was enjoyable to spend these moments with our ranger and the other guests. The game drives were great and exciting. Our ranger Trust was the best. You could feel his pride for this job, and also his knowledge was extraordinary. And because of his passion, we had the chance to spot the rare black rhino! And also a special thank that he went on a bush walk with us … standing on the bank of a river looking at 3 hippo’s in the water, was a real adrenalin moment.~ Guido-Krystyna W ~ Wommelgem, Belgium
