Carnarvon Dale once provided lodgings for travellers whose journeys had been halted by the flooded Bushman’s River. In that same tradition of hospitality, Roger and Maryan Hart welcome guests to their 1820 Settler farmhouse, the Bottom House, and the 1907 Edwardian Top House.
Carnarvon Dale is 3 star graded but offers wildlife enthusiasts 5-star game drives in a malaria free area on our award-winning Amakhala Game Reserve and also, for guests staying 2 nights or more, on the neighbouring world famous Shamwari Game Reserve, the latter exclusively and by private arrangement and at no extra cost. We can also arrange a morning excursion to Addo National Park for a breakfast with the elephants.
We offer comfortable, owner-managed accommodation and excellent game viewing at an affordable price which, we believe, provides good value for money.

“A wonderful Safari experience”
We had a memorable 3 days at Carnarvon Dale in early February 2016. The accommodation was comfortable and clean and we had the 2 bedroom chalet all to ourselves. We were well looked after by the charming sisters who served us lunch and by Roger and Maryan for the evening meal. The highlight of our stay were the two early morning and two afternoon drives. Braun, our guide was knowledgeable and personable and we enjoyed his enthusiasm for the animals and their habitats. We were especially fortunate to see most of the big 5 and to enjoy spectacular drives in both the Amakhala and Shamwari Reserves. The elephants were a particular favourite sighting and Braun was really informative having got us up close and personal to such wonderful beasts. We are still in awe of the experience some two months on. Carnarvon Dale provides a very well balanced safari experience.~ jollytripper7 ~ Saffron Walden, United Kingdom
“A truly memorable experience”
We spent three nights at Carnarvon Dale in February 2016 and from the moment we arrived we knew it would be our kind of place. Roger and Maryan were absolutely wonderful hosts; thoughtful, there when we needed them, but otherwise unobtrusive. Meals were delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with our interesting and friendly hosts. Our room was spacious and comfortable and we slept unbelievably well. Our bathroom was clean and, if basic, perfectly adequate. Braun, our guide, was informative and great fun. We haven’t stopped talking about the game drives. We shall never forget the experience.~ irenecL77JJ ~ Helensburgh, United Kingdom
“Amazing days in Amakhala”
An authentic and comfortable place to do safari in Amakhala. Roger is a friendly host and the rangers are absolutely great. We spent only 2 days but the experience we made is unforgettable, not only for the unbelievable encounters we made with the wild life but also for the cultural exchanges we had and the many interesting things we could learn from the owner and the rangers. They guided us in beautiful places in both Amakhala and Shamwari game reserve (the latter can be accessed staying at Carnarvon Dale for 2 days or more, which is really a unique opportunity), where we could observe all the big and small animals we dreamt about before to arrive. When we left the main gate behind us, we felt like we have been in this place for a long time. Thanks to all for a lovely stay!~ Andrea W ~ Zug, Switzerland
We have stayed at Carnavaron Dale in April 2015 for 2 nights. If you´re not looking for a luxury resort, it´s the perfect place. You´re practically living with the owner, but in a separate house, which is very charming. They really take good care of you and the homemade food is delicious. You have to be interested to get in touch with the people living there, because you have your meals together. Which is really nice, you´re getting a lot of information about South Africa.
The game drives are really well organised and we saw a lot of animals. The guides are perfectly informed and tell you a lot of interesting things about the surrounding. The groups are very small and you can feel, that they really care about nature.
If you don´t want to have a safari experience like all the others, it´s the place to go!
